Location

The largest of the Elaphiti islands, Sipan is located around 17 kilometres from the famous Croatian city of Dubrovnik. The island is famous for its beautiful harbour and selection of excellent beaches. Despite being the largest of the Elaphiti Islands it has an area of just 16 kilometres and a population of around 500. Historically it was where wealthy Dubrovnik families would escape the city.

Weather

With a pleasant Mediterranean climate, the island has hot dry summers and mild winters. The best time to visit is between May and September, when the temperature regularly reaches above 25 degrees and the seas around the island are warm. Like many smaller island destinations, it is seasonal, and visitors may find that things are closed if they visit in the winter.

History and Culture

Sipan has always been a famous holiday destination and was the place the rich people from Dubrovnik used to use as a summer retreat as far back as the 15th century. It is best known for the many large houses built around the island, including the large late-Gothic Rector’s palace and the ruins of the archbishop’s palaces. The smaller village of Sudurad is defined by a 16th century castle that was built by a rich merchant family during Dubrovnik’s golden years.

Family Activities

Sipan Island doesn’t really have any prescribed family activities, however that doesn’t mean that it isn’t a good place to visit with children. It is renowned for being undeveloped, ensuring there are a host of activities that allow children to explore nature. Families can enjoy a bike ride through the island’s wooded area, a hike along the coast or a swim in the Adriatic, making it perfect for active families who want to get out and explore the natural world on their family holiday.

Tours and Attractions

The island is ideal for people who want to get out into the world and explore nature. There are an excellent range of hiking and biking trails, where visitors can cast off the shackles of the modern world and get in and amongst nature. Sipan is also home to many beautiful beaches that are generally quieter and more peaceful than some of Croatia’s other destinations, replete with stunning sapphire waters and beautiful surroundings. For those willing to travel, boat trips to places like Dubrovnik or the Blue Cave are also available at Sipan’s harbour.

Entertainment

As the least developed of the Elaphiti Islands, its nightlife isn’t as vibrant as some of the other places in Croatia. This makes it the kind of place where visitors can sit and relax amidst unspoiled nature in a chilled out cocktail bar or an excellent local restaurant. There is nothing better than relaxing and watching the sun set over the magnificent Adriatic Sea.
