Location

Makarska is a harbour town on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast, renowned for its many beautiful beaches, seafront promenade and nightlife, which have led to it being nicknamed the Croatian Riviera. It faces out onto the beautiful Adriatic Sea and is located on a small bay, nestled between two wooded headlands. It is famous for its beautiful harbour, where you can catch a ferry to several islands in the area, spectacular wildlife such as, golden eagles and majestic natural beauty. The town itself is fairly small with a population of around 13,000, making it the perfect place to relax.

Weather

With a hot Mediterranean climate during the summer, temperatures regularly average above 25 degrees Celsius. The seas around it are warm throughout the summer and a cool breeze blows off it, making it a very pleasant place to spend a holiday. The best time to visit is during June, July and August, although the winters are mild, meaning it is a good all-year-round destination.

History and Culture

The town showed traces of human inhabitation that date back to around 1500 BC and it is widely assumed that the Cretans used the natural port that lies on its coast. The first recorded evidence of a settlement comes during the 4th century, where there was likely a small village at the very edge of the Roman Empire. It began to grow during the 7th century Slav invasion, with locals gaining a reputation for being excellent seamen, who would charge Venetian sailors to pass. It fell to the Ottomans during their expansion into Europe, before transferring to Napoleon and then the Austro-Hungarian Empire, eventually joining the newly formed Yugoslavian state and following Croatia after that state broke up.

Cuisine

The region of Dalmatia has a plethora of excellent local specialities that visitors are sure to enjoy, including: Pasticada, stewed beef in vegetables and baked lamb, with fresh vegetables that melts off the bone. This alongside the unique ‘Peka’ cooking style, where food is slow cooked using embers from the fire and the world famous red wine that is produced in the area ensures that there is plenty of food and drink for visitors to enjoy during their stay.

Family Activities

Situated on Croatia’s Riviera, it ensures that there is a multitude of fantastic beaches that the whole family can enjoy, if they are looking for a beach holiday. There are several excellent biking trails, for families who want to be active on their family holiday and Diocletian’s famous palace in the old city of Split, for those who love ancient history. The Krka National Park and its complex of waterfalls is another excellent sight, which people of all ages will enjoy.

Close enough to the historic city of Split, visitors can enjoy many of the wonderful things on offer there, including the famous Palace of Diocletian and the Cathedral of St. Domnius, both stunning examples of Roman architecture. The Krka National Park is a beautiful and scenic place, which nature lovers are bound to enjoy, it is famous for its 7 waterfalls, greenery and idyllic lakes. There are also beaches and plenty of hiking trails in the area around the town, making it the perfect place to enjoy an active and fun holiday.

Entertainment

The town of Makarska has a vast array of beach bars, hosting beach parties that stretch from late afternoon, long into the night. Then you can either elect to migrate into the centre of town, where you will find more trendy cocktail bars and clubs playing all kinds of music, with Listun Street especially renowned for its party atmosphere; or remain close to the beach, where there are yet more clubs. Every Friday, there is the ‘Fisherman’s Night’ on the promenade, with a host of shows, concerts, dancers and live performances.
