Not To Be Missed

When To Travel:

When To Travel:

The weather can be uncomfortably hot during the summer months (April to October) and temperatures can be as high as 40°C or above. As you’ll be walking around for much of the day in Petra, the summer heat can be problematic. Spring time (March to May) or autumn (September to November) could be the best time to travel when the weather is warm and mild.

What To Wear:

What To Wear:

Comfortable footwear should be at the top of your packing list. The terrain is rocky, sandy and sometimes uneven so choosing a safe pair of boots is important. If you’re worried about breaking in new walking boots, all-terrain sandals could be an alternative. There’s also very little shade in this archaeological city so remember to bring a hat and good quality sunglasses to protect your face and eyes from the sun.

How Long To Stay:

How Long To Stay:

It’s possible to spend just a day in Petra without an overnight stay. But with almost 40 square miles to cover, we would definitely recommend between 1-2 days to really get the full experience. Our 7 day Jordan Discovery Tour includes 1 full day and 2 nights in Petra.

Facilities In Petra:

Facilities In Petra:

Petra is surprisingly well-equipped for tourist footfall. Toilets and cafes can be found at most of the major sites within the archaeological complex so you can refuel and get refreshed throughout the day. You will also find a number of stalls selling various souvenirs around Petra – you can find everything from trinkets and jewellery to carpets and homeware.

Safety In Jordan:

Safety In Jordan:

The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is extremely safe and so is the ancient city of Petra. The biggest threat to tourists can be the intense summer heat which can cause heatstroke, sunburn or dehydration. Always carry enough water during your tour of Petra and be sure to make the most of the cafes along your route. You may also experience some pushy hawkers trying to sell souvenirs or fake ancient coins, but they are mostly harmless (just overly persistent) and the easiest way is to politely decline.
