The official language in Tunisia is Arabic, with many of its words being of French, Turkish, Italian and Berber. In addition, Darija is also spoken in Tunisia.

History & Culture

The current Tunisians are the long descendants of native Berbers and of people from many civilizations that have invaded the country. With the Phoenicians arrival came the founding of Carthage in 8th Century B.C. The area became a point of interest and a dominant sea power, clashing with the Romans until its defeat in 146 B.C. The Romans did rule until the 5th century, when Tunisia was invaded by Europeans. In the 16th century Tunisia became part of the Arab culture under the Ottoman empire’ being a French protectorate from 1881 until 1956 when it became independent, yet still to this day remains close with France.

Cuisine

Tunisia’s cuisine has developed through the many civilisations that have inhabited the region and as it in the heart of the Mediterranean region its gastronomic style is influenced by the countries surrounding it. Dishes are flavourful, colourful and rich in texture and taste. Some of their notable dishes include shakshouka, a ratatouille of tomatoes and eggs, and the nation’s speciality brik, a deep-fried shaped egg with tuna. Couscous however tends to appear with more dishes on every menu as a side accompanied with meat or root vegetables.

Family Activities

Apart from Tunisia being a great destination for a family to enjoy a beach holiday, the country has much to offer for those who like to venture out and be active. Families can head to the Carthage Land, which is a unique experience with many fascinating wonders, apart from being the first ever theme park to open in Africa. Similarly, the Djerba Explore park is a great place to visit in the Midoun tourist area.

Tours & Attractions

For those wanting to explore Tunisia there are vast opportunities to do so. Foremostly, Tunisia is known for its excellent golfing ranges such as in Hammamet, Golf Citrus, in Sousse’s Port El Kantaoui, in Tunis and in Monastir to name a few. Planet Oasis is also a great place to explore and observe the planets and stars as well as 4x4 jeeps and quad biking, cycling, camel rides, diving and hiking.

Entertainment

Despite Tunisia being a Muslim country, it has developed a vibrant social life and a taste for good wines and beer. Most supermarkets in large resorts sell alcohol and you will find it in most popular restaurants. There are a range of bars, cafes and restaurants in the popular resorts and in the capital, which are vibrant and can cater to a range of entertainment tastes.
