Aphrodite Hills inFocus

Location

Aphrodite Hills is a coastal resort in the district of Paphos, Cyprus, meaning that it is in the southwestern part of the island. It's named after Aphrodite, the Greek goddess, and the resort is about a mile from Aphrodite’s Rock. It is very close to Paphos International Airport, meaning that it is easy to reach, and is relatively close to a number of other interesting spots on the island, including Limassol, (67.3 km), the coastal town of Peyia (17.4 km) and the other coastal town of Pissouri (36 km).

History and Culture

Located just above the city of Paphos, the city has had evidence of human inhabitation since Neolithic times and was inhabited by the Mycenaeans and mentioned in the Odyssey. It is close to the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite, known as Aphrodite’s Rock or ‘Petra tou Romiou’. Greek myth claims that when Aphrodite, goddess of beauty, was born in the foams of the sea, she was carried to that exact spot on a clam shell. There are many popular local myths and legends that surround that particular spot, including the belief that if you swim around it three times, you will be blessed with eternal youth, fertility and true love.

Cuisine

As a large resort, it offers plenty of both local and international food choices. Visitors will find many great international restaurants within the resort itself, with the nearby town of Paphos, the best place to go for those who want delicious local cuisine. Cypriot food culture is all about the freshness of the ingredients and the temperate Mediterranean climate, is ideal for growing vegetables, olives and grapes, ensuring that the local wine is delicious as are the vast array of mezes, salads and meat dishes. Thanks to its coastal location, you will also find plenty of fresh fish in the area, which is usually eaten on the day that it is caught.
