History and Culture

Dubrovnik came to prominence in the 7th century AD, caused the population to swell. This along with its ascension to the Byzantine Empire led to a remarkable period of growth that eventually led to the Venetians seeing Dubrovnik as a trading threat in the 13th century. The Venetians attacked, and Dubrovnik fell under its rule between 1205 and 1358. Dubrovnik then became an independent trading state thanks to the treaty of Zadar, developing a flourishing merchant network, which had links to the Ottomans, India, Africa and the Cape Verde islands, with its influence reaching as far as the Court of Queen Elizabeth I. Tragedy struck on the 6th of April 1667, when an earthquake hit the city, diminishing its power and leaving it vulnerable to Napoleonic conquest in 1806. After his defeat it became part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1815, before joining Yugoslavia after the First World War and suffering significant damage during the war of 1991/2. Upon the end of that conflict it became a key city in Croatia’s swift renaissance.

Cuisine

Featuring a rich culinary tradition it encompasses a huge range of flavours and is especially good for fresh seafood, thanks to its coastal location. Crni rižot (Black Risotto), made with squid ink and a host of other local seafood is a delicious local staple; Mušule na buzaru (stewed muscles) are exceedingly popular and generally involve Italian flavours like garlic, parsley and white wine; fresh oysters abound throughout the region, ideal for people who want that gorgeous taste of the sea.
