A popular holiday town on the eastern coast of Malta, it is famous for its seaside promenade, which features the 18th-century Fort Tigné. Next door is the vibrant town of St. Julian’s, home to the buzzing area of Paceville. This makes it the perfect destination for those who want to enjoy the deep blue Mediterranean Sea. The town is relatively large for Malta, with a population of around 16,000, ensuring a good time for all who visit.

Considered one of Malta’s most modern towns, it doesn’t have the same rich history as places like Valletta. During the Great Siege of Malta, the town was known as il-Qortin and served as a base for Turkish soldiers assaulting the Fort of St. Elmo. It was here that the Turkish leader Dragut was killed during a bombardment from the fort of the same name. The new town came to life in the mid-19th century, when it was given its unique design and maintained its connection to Valletta via a ferry service. This link to Valletta gave it tourist appeal, allowing it to transform into the most popular destination on the island by the 1960s.

As Sliema is a built-up tourist destination, it has a multitude of exceptional attractions, including two stunning bays, called St George’s and Spinola, which are both known for their majestic turquoise waters. The coastal promenade that runs between it and the town of St Julian’s is an excellent place to wander, find a nice restaurant or quiet seaside bar to enjoy a refreshing drink. Further afield, visitors can take a day trip to Valletta or Mdina, both exquisite historic cities that are guaranteed to be appreciated.

A vibrant tourist centre, it offers a wide selection of nighttime options that appeal to every taste. It is famous for its wine bars, where visitors can enjoy a delicious drink, alongside food or snacks. There are also a good number of smaller nightclubs, ideal for people who want to dance the night away. The majority of the nighttime action is found on the seafront promenade, where visitors can stop off at a trendy bar, replete with spectacular views across the sapphire blue sea.

The best shopping in Sliema is located along Tower Road, Bisazza Street, and the Strand, where visitors can find a diverse range of excellent shops. The majority of people tend to shop for clothes, although other options include jewellery, shoes, toys, pharmacy items, cosmetics, souvenirs and gifts. Slightly further afield are places like St Julian’s and Portomaso, where there are yet more stores, which will sate your every shopping desire.
