Location

Eilat is a port town located on the southern Israeli Coast, situated on the Red Sea close to the Jordanian border. It is famous for its golden beaches, which provide access to sublime coral reefs that play host to a variety of fascinating marine creatures. This has made it especially popular for snorkelling and diving, with the Coral World Underwater Observatory another great way to see the underwater delights on offer. The town of Eilat itself is medium-sized having a population of around 50,000 people, making it ideal for a relaxing beach holiday.

Weather

The resort is blessed with a hot climate for the vast majority of the year. Temperatures average above 20 degrees between March and November, ensuring that visitors can enjoy its sun-kissed beaches throughout the year. The hottest month is July, when temperatures average a baking 33 degrees and the sea temperature stands at 28 degrees. It is slightly colder in the winter months, although the average of 14 degrees in January remains eminently pleasant.

History and Culture

Its strategic importance as a gateway city to the Red Sea, means that it dates back to Biblical times. It is the location that King Solomon launched an expedition to find gold, before becoming a place of refuge for Jews, when they fled the Arabian conquests of the 7th century. It was conquered by the crusaders in the 11th century before being retaken by Saladin in 1167 and falling into relative poverty. The town was then rebuilt in the 1950s once the modern state of Israel was formed becoming a popular holiday destination on the Red Sea.

Family Activities

With a great range of family activities, it ensures family holiday fun for everyone. Foremost of these is the many great beaches in the area, where younger children can play on the golden sands and older children can enjoy the shallow waters, which offer excellent snorkeling. The King’s City entertainment park is a unique biblically themed attraction that has fascinating, educational and fun rides based on biblical events like Noah’s Ark. Wildlife lovers should be sure to check the Eilat International Bird Park, where you will find thousands of different birds from around the world. Finally, the Underwater Observatory is a must, allowing children to see marine creatures such as dolphins playing among the coral reef in a safe and secure environment.

Tours and Attractions

The area of Eilat is a famous diving and snorkelling destination and anyone with an interest in underwater life should be sure to check out the coral reefs that are submerged just of the Eliat Coast, they contain a host of fascinating marine life and are well worth a visit. The Red Canyon hiking trail is an excellent option for nature lovers, offering beautiful red sandstone and a host of other fascinating geological sights. While the Botanical Gardens of Eliat are beautifully kept and have a plethora of different flora and fauna. Finally, the Underwater Observatory offers a completely different kind of experience, allowing visitors to see some incredible marine life in their natural habitat.

Entertainment

Visitors will find plenty of places to visit as it is a vibrant resort city with an active night-time scene. Despite Tel-Aviv being the most famous Israeli party destination, Eilat, is actually the city with the most bars, clubs and other entertainment venues per-capita. These are mostly located outside of the city away from residential areas, meaning that visitors will have to plan their night more carefully than in more centralized locations. Beach parties also regularly occur, with the boardwalk area.

Shopping

Eilat has an excellent shopping scene, which is centred around a series of shopping centres and boardwalks. The Eilat Ice Mall includes and all-year-around ice rink and a plethora of different shops selling fashion items, gadgets and books. The Mall Hayam has a large number of shops and is close to the Red Sea, meaning that a trip there can be combined with a day at the beach. While Le Boulevard has a number of high-end fashion brands that visitors are bound to enjoy. Finally, the King’s Boardwalk and the Royal Boardwalk, are beautiful seaside promenades that combine stunning views with popular shops from some of the biggest names in fashion.
