Arrival into Muscat - Jebel Akhdar

Day 1

Upon morning arrival into Muscat you will meet your English-speaking driver and enjoy a half-day tour of Muscat. First, the splendid Grand Mosque with capacity for up to 25,000 worshippers. The main prayer hall has a gorgeous carpet, woven by 600 women over four years. Please wear conservative clothing in the Grand Mosque; do not wear revealing or transparent clothing and cover yourself head to toe. Ladies must cover their head with a scarf. The Grand Mosque is open to tourists from Saturday to Thursday from 08:00 to 11:00. From there, visit the old town of Muscat and take a quick photo of the Royal Opera House. Proceed to Muttrah Souq, one of the oldest souqs (street markets) in Oman. Explore and pick up some souvenirs for friends and family. Drive to the Bait Al Zubair Museum with its impressive collection of traditional Omani artifacts, including weapons, artworks, male and female attire, cosmetics and jewellery. Leave the old town and drive to the Al Alam Palace. The palace’s design dates to the early 1970s, demonstrating the beauty of modern Islamic architecture. For security reasons, the palace is not open to the public, but you can take a photo outside. Following this head to Birkat Al Mauz. Here, the locals grow fresh bananas and date palm trees. Witness the incredible Oman Falaj irrigation System, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Check in at your Jebel Akhdar hotel to enjoy dinner and stay overnight.

Jebel Akhdar - Nizwa - Wahiba

Day 2

After breakfast, check out of the hotel and meet your English-speaking driver. Once aboard your 4WD head to Wahiba, visiting Jebel Akhdar and Nizwa en route. Arrive at the spectacular mountain of Jebel Akhdar, where locals grow their own fresh fruit and produce. Drive up the mountain and go on a walking tour of the terrace plantations and abandoned villages. From there head to Nizwa Souq, a traditional street market with vendors selling fresh produce, handicrafts and souvenirs. Enjoy time at leisure in the souq. If you visit on a Friday you may see the cattle market where the locals gather to auction their livestock. Outside the souq, visit the 17th century Nizwa Fort, designed to defend the route through the mountains. For this reason, the structure contains tall fortifified walls and towers. Guests can climb the winding, narrow staircase to access the rooftop which provides outstanding views of Nizwa city from above. Drive on to Wahiba Sands, large sand dunes with some reaching a height of 100m or more, where you will visit a local Bedouin house and experience authentic Bedouin hospitality from this nomadic Arab tribe. Learn about Bedouin culture and enjoy some traditional Omani coffee and dates. To finish the day, go for an exhilarating drive through the sand dunes before checking in to the Wahiba Desert Camp. Enjoy dinner and stay overnight at the campsite.
