I used to live on Skiathos, and even now, it’s a place that feels like home the moment I land. What many people don’t realise is that Skiathos isn’t just a destination in itself. It’s also an ideal base for exploring two of the most beautiful islands in the Northern Sporades: Skopelos and Alonissos.
The best part? You still fly in and out of Skiathos Airport, but from there, island hopping is remarkably simple. Whether you’re after relaxing day trips or a few nights away, you can explore three very different islands in one memorable journey.
Why Skiathos Is the Ideal Gateway
Skiathos has something rare among the Greek islands: a well-connected international airport and frequent ferry routes to nearby islands. Flights arrive directly from the UK during the summer months, making it easy to start and end your journey here.
From Skiathos port, ferries operate regularly to Skopelos and Alonissos. You can visit either island for the day or stay overnight and return to Skiathos when you’re ready, with no complicated logistics.
Skiathos: Lively, Beautiful and Full of Hidden Corners
Skiathos is often celebrated for its beaches and nightlife, but living here taught me that the island’s true magic lies in its details.
One of the most memorable sights is Lalaria Beach, a stunning white-pebble beach accessible only by boat. It’s the only fully pebble beach on the island, renowned for its dramatic rock arch extending into the sea.
For food enthusiasts, No Name offers what I still regard as the best gyros outside Athens. For coffee, Phaos World is essential, not only for the quality but also for Nikos, the delightful host who makes everyone feel like a local.
History runs deeply through island life. At Evangelistria Monastery, you can sample homemade sweets and honey while standing where, in 1807, the first Greek flag was created. Nearby, Kastro, the island’s former capital, is another significant site and the first place in Greece to raise the new flag.
If you’re happy to wander through the winding streets of the old town, you’ll find Salkimi, a charming, shaded restaurant bar hidden above the port. It’s worth every moment of searching, especially at sunset, when ferries arrive, and planes descend overhead.

Skopelos: Green Hills, Traditions and Timeless Charm
Just a short ferry ride from Skiathos, Skopelos feels like stepping into a quieter, greener world. While many know it as the home of Mamma Mia!, the island offers far more than its film fame.
A visit wouldn’t be complete without climbing the 106 steps to the Ai Giannis chapel, perched dramatically above the sea. The view from the top is breathtaking and well worth the effort.
Skopelos is famous for its food, especially its twisted filo cheese pies. My personal favourites are the sweet cheese pies. Head to Michalis Bakery early in the morning if you want to try one, as they don’t last long.
The main port, with its stepped paths and small churches scattered between houses, is perfect for a peaceful walk. The island also has several archaeological sites, adding another layer of history to explore.
Skopelos works beautifully as a day trip, but staying overnight allows you to experience the island once the ferries depart, when it becomes truly serene.
Alonissos: Nature, Wildlife and a Slower Pace of Life
If Skopelos feels calm, Alonissos feels profoundly restorative. This island is perfect for nature lovers, hikers, and anyone seeking peace and simplicity.
It is highly wildlife-focused, offering stunning mountain walks through pine forests. The surrounding waters are part of the Alonissos Marine Park, where you can explore marine archaeology by diving, kayaking, or joining boat excursions.
A must-visit is Votsi, a charming fishing village that seems like a step back in time. Nearby, the Traditional House of Alonissos provides insight into traditional crafts and the island’s old way of life.
Alonissos is ideal for a long day trip, but an overnight stay lets you experience its quiet evenings, fresh seafood and truly relaxed rhythm.

Day Trips or Overnight Stays
One of the main benefits of visiting these islands is the flexibility it offers. You can stay in Skiathos and take day trips to Skopelos or Alonissos, or spend a night or two on either island and still head back to Skiathos for your flight home.
Flying in and out of Skiathos simplifies everything while allowing you to explore three distinct Greek islands in one trip.
Final Thoughts
Skiathos offers energy, beaches, and buzz. Skopelos brings greenery, tradition, and charm. Alonissos delivers peace, nature, and authenticity. Together, they create a perfectly balanced Greek island experience, made even richer by exploring the small local details that come from truly knowing the islands.
