Location

The fortified capital of Malta gazes out across the Mediterranean Sea. It was built in the late 16th century, following the Grand Siege of Malta, by the Ottoman Empire, and is famous for its magnificent Baroque architecture, rich history, and numerous museums. The inner city is relatively small, with a population of just 7,000, although the metropolitan area surrounding the town has a population of nearly 400,000.

History And Culture

Created after the ‘Great Siege of 1565’, when the Order of the Knights of Saint John fought off the might of the Ottoman Empire. Upon this great victory for Christianity, Pope Pius IV sent his most respected engineer to construct a fortress to both defend Christendom and demonstrate its glory to the world. The result was the magnificent fortified city that we see today, nestled between two natural harbours, which is ideally located to repel attacks. By the 16th century, it had grown into a large city, with many of Malta’s other residents coming to live in the safety of the fortified town. This meant that Valletta quickly became more opulent, with the aesthetic quality of the buildings significantly improving. Valletta continued to be a rich trading point right up until World War II, when German troops frequently attacked it. In more modern times, it has grown into a large financial and commercial centre.

Family Activities

With a host of family-friendly activities, younger visitors are bound to enjoy their time in the capital city. Slightly older children will appreciate the Game of Thrones tour, which is usually delivered by actors who played minor roles in HBO’s iconic series and takes you to several recognisable sets. The toy museum depicts the history of toys through the ages, making it both educational and fun for children. While the Malta experience teaches visitors about the island’s 7000-year history, using interactive exhibits, making it both educational and fun for their family holiday.

Tours And Attractions

An architectural wonderland, it is steeped in history, making it ideal for people who love to explore, sightsee and get to know a place. The first stop on every itinerary should be the city’s magnificent fortified harbour, which is watched over by the Fort of St Elmo and has several old baroque warehouses. Then, visitors should head for the Auberges of the Knights, which offer a fascinating insight into how the Knights lived in Valletta. The Grandmaster’s Palace is the jewel in Valletta’s crown, a magnificent example of Baroque architecture. It was the seat of power in the city when the Knights ruled it.

Entertainment

The city’s nightlife largely centres around the areas of Paceville and St. Julian’s, which are lined with cocktail bars, discos, clubs, and restaurants. They offer something for everyone, from people who want to relax and have a quiet drink, all the way to those who want to stay out and party all night.
