Valletta

The fortified capital of Malta gazes out across the Mediterranean Sea. It was built in the late 16th century, following the Grand Siege of Malta, by the Ottoman Empire, and is famous for its magnificent Baroque architecture, rich history, and numerous museums. The inner city is relatively small, with a population of just 7,000, although the metropolitan area surrounding the town has a population of nearly 400,000.

Created after the ‘Great Siege of 1565’, when the Order of the Knights of Saint John fought off the might of the Ottoman Empire. Upon this great victory for Christianity, Pope Pius IV sent his most respected engineer to construct a fortress to both defend Christendom and demonstrate its glory to the world. The result was the magnificent fortified city that we see today, nestled between two natural harbours, which is ideally located to repel attacks. By the 16th century, it had grown into a large city, with many of Malta’s other residents coming to live in the safety of the fortified town. This meant that Valletta quickly became more opulent, with the aesthetic quality of the buildings significantly improving. Valletta continued to be a rich trading point right up until World War II, when German troops frequently attacked it. In more modern times, it has grown into a large financial and commercial centre.
