Crete

A beautiful island that combines a rich history, delicious food, vibrant nightlife, and spectacular natural scenery to create the perfect holiday. As the largest of the Greek islands, Crete blends stunning landscapes, fascinating history, rich folklore, and a remarkable culinary tradition to deliver a holiday experience that excites and delights in equal measure. Its golden beaches and azure waters are an obvious attraction, making it ideal for those seeking a relaxing beach holiday.

However, Crete is much more than just a beach destination, bound by myth as the birthplace of Zeus and home of the Minotaur. It is also the birthplace of the famous Minoan culture, which dominated the area until disaster struck, triggering the Bronze Age Collapse.

The breathtaking White Mountains, home to the famous Samaria Gorge and the Omolos Plateau, dominate Western Crete. On the northwest coast lies the charming, unspoilt town of Chania, known for its lush greenery and excellent beaches. Heraklion, the island’s capital, is situated nearly at the centre of the northern coast. It offers lively entertainment, shops, and nightlife typical of a large city, along with Greece’s most-visited historic sites, such as Knossos. To the east of Heraklion is Hersonissos, renowned for some of Crete's best beaches.

Nearby is Sissi, a small, tranquil resort with a picturesque harbour, and further east are the quaint fishing villages of Elounda and Ayios Nikolaos. Elounda, the smaller of the two, retains plenty of character and charm, with excellent fish tavernas perfect for family and romantic holidays. A recommended boat trip from here is to Spinalonga Island, once a leper colony. Its neighbour, Ayios Nikolaos, becomes livelier during the high season. Crete is also famous for its exceptional cuisine, rugged mountains, and unique flora and fauna.

This island holiday destination is sure to appeal and dazzle visitors, catering to every taste.

Location

Crete, the largest of the Greek islands, covers approximately 8,336 square kilometres and houses over 600,000 residents. Located in the southern Aegean, it features a diverse landscape of rugged mountains, fertile plains, deep gorges, and a vast coastline. Crete’s striking terrain has cultivated a rich cultural and natural heritage, from ancient Minoan ruins to traditional villages nestled in the hills.

Completely isolated from the European mainland, Crete boasts unique flora and fauna, including the endemic Cretan wild goat, or kri-kri. Its fertile soil yields olives, wine, and other local delicacies, reflecting centuries of agricultural tradition. Visitors can discover stunning natural landmarks, hike through gorges, or stroll along pristine beaches, all while experiencing a tangible connection to the island’s long and varied history.

Blending ancient civilisation, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant culture, Crete offers a distinctive Mediterranean experience that appeals to both nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.

Weather

Famous for its temperate, sunny weather year-round, the island is hot between May and October, with temperatures averaging an impressive 26 degrees. When summer arrives in Crete, it is ideal for sun-worshippers, with temperatures in July and August averaging 29 degrees.

There is also a cool breeze that blows across the island, providing some relief from the hot sun during the summer months. Winters are mild, with temperatures of 17 degrees in November and a reasonably pleasant 14 degrees in December.

History And Culture

Considered the birthplace of Zeus, the most important of the Olympians, Crete played a significant role in mythology. It was later home to King Minos, whose refusal to sacrifice a bull to the gods angered Poseidon, who punished him by causing his wife to fall in love with a bull. This led to the birth of the Minotaur, who was imprisoned in the labyrinth built by Daedalus, whose ill-fated flight with his son Icarus began from the island.

Eventually, Theseus, king of Athens and one of the most famous Greek heroes, slew the Minotaur with the help of Ariadne. Crete was also the birthplace of the Minoan civilisation, which flourished between 2600 and 1150 BC and was one of the most advanced civilisations in the ancient world. Its most famous city was Knossos, whose ruins can still be seen on the island today.

The Minoans declined following a natural disaster when a volcano erupted in 1450 BC, leading to an invasion by the Dorians. Crete remained quiet for the subsequent years, being occupied by the Romans before passing into Byzantine control, during which much of its wealth was accumulated.

Cuisine

Renowned for its remarkable diet, which is both healthy and tasty, it was the subject of a scientific study that recommended the Mediterranean diet as a way of living longer. Things like olive oil, citrus fruits, and grapes are abundant, while the local wine is excellent and the popular tsikoudia (Cretan firewater) is a must-try during your stay.

Fresh fish is also a staple of the Cretan diet, along with apaki, a delicious pork dish that takes three days to cook.
